91 Gallery: Barbosa who? Even to regular readers of illustrators this is the usual response if Barbosa’s name is mentioned. Not that it is mentioned that often even though he spent more than sixty years following a varied and respected career illustrating and designing everything from esoteric educational fact books for Longmans to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’s yacht. If he is known at all it is in the recesses of the book trade where his reputation as a book jacket artist is respected and appreciated. His dust jackets for the Flashman series by George Macdonald Fraser were, by Fraser’s own admission, a considerable positive contribution to the success of the first book and the subsequent series. Georgette Heyer used his art to decorate the last fifteen of her Regency novels and it would have been sixteen had he not fallen ill just before the very last one. Her respect for his work can be judged by the fact that she insisted on his replacement, Edward Mortelmans, designing the cover in Barbosa’a style. ABOVE: Flashman and the Tiger , 1995. This was the last dust jacket cover Barbosa ever did for the popular Flashman series. Although he passed away in 1995, the book wasn’t published until 1999. It could have been one of his designs for the cover of the infamous 19th century book ‘Memoirs of Cora Pearl’.
