51 Clément Hurel A master of many styles — whether cartoons, drama or horror, he did it all. One of the hardest working movie poster artists in France, Hurel practically worked all his life in the movie poster business until a couple of years before his death. Born in 1927, Clément Hurel usually signed his name as ‘Hurel’ or ‘Clem-Hurel’. Unlike most of his contemporaries who worked for the American productions established in France, Hurel beganworking for the French Gaumont, RKO, Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie (known for having produced all the episodes of the Louis de Funès ‘ Gendarme’ series) and Hammer Film Productions. Throughout his career, Hurel worked mainly on advertising and film posters, producing more than 1,500 posters during his career. Among the legendary posters he created were those for such films as ‘ A Bout de Souffle’ (‘Breathless’, 1960), ‘ La Traversée de Paris’ (1956), ‘ Le Bal de Vampires’ (‘The Fearless Vampire Killers’, 1969) and ‘ Il Était Une Fois en Amérique’ (‘Once Upon a Time in America’, 1984). Hurel was also an artist of many different graphic styles, feeling at ease creating cartoonish posters, such as the one for ‘The Fearless Vampire Text continues on page 55 FACING PAGE: ‘ Voulez-vous Danser Avec Moi?’ / ‘Come Dance With Me!’ (1959).
