It is said he was also strongly influenced by “The Eight” (Henri, Sloan, Glackens, Shinn, Prendergast, Davies, Lawson, and Luks) and their realistic paintings. After art school, Dohanos gained his first experiences of the commercial art field when he worked for an advertising firm in Cleveland. Seeking work beyond the confines of an ad agency studio, he then traveled around the country painting murals before heading to New York to work as a commercial artist. His first magazine illustration was for McCall’s in 1938, and that same year he married his longtime sweetheart, Margit Kovacs, with whom he had two children, Peter and Paul. In the early 1940s he moved to the artist colony of Westport, Connecticut, where he found inspiration in the everyday life of his suburban neighbors.
