81 Arturo Del Castillo is something of a legend amongst enthusiasts of comic art. His exquisite pen and brush work graced many European comics throughout the latter part of the last century. Born in Chile in 1925, he moved to Argentina in 1948 and teamed up with his brother who was already working in the commercial art field. His first job was working in an advertising agency, but he soon began drawing Westerns for Argentinian comics before joining the D’Ami Agency, whose primary function was to provide top-notch comic strip art to a variety of European publishers. He excelled at his craft and was in constant demand by publishers, including the UK company AP ( Amalgamated Press —latterly Fleetway ), for which he created some of his most memorable strips, particularly in the field of Westerns. In his earliest work for AP he created strips for 'The Man in the Iron Mask' and the Three Musketeers' by Alexandre Dumas, where he created strips for ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ and ‘The Three Musketeers’. The Illustration Art Gallery has very generously provided us with scans of ‘The King’s Musketeer’, a strip which ran in Film Fun and was later reprinted in Lion comic.
