It’s early afternoon on a July Saturday in Montreal, and if Olindo Gratton’s 13 saints have any sympathy for the plight of those below, they betray no sign. Traffic heads nowhere fast on Boulevard Rene-Levesque, as motorists probe desperately for an escape route that does not exist, and gaze enviously at pedestrians who ease past the barricades that cause these idling engines. Here are the outskirts of the world’s largest jazz festival, mere blocks from swaths of trumpet and saxophone that intertwine in the midday breeze, but for the 13 bronze statues atop the façade of Cathedrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde, the only horns in the wind are played by motorists maddened at a snail’s progress. Follow the sidewalk two blocks north-west, hang a right onto Rue Sainte- Catherine, and it’s an easy stroll to the cluster of venues that do the event’s
