His work is steeped in the mists of antiquity but offset with a powerful immediacy, which manifests itself inhis ability tocreate characterswho look real, as opposed to romanticised, inhabiting worlds that are governed by the laws of physics, which make his giant reptiles seem all the more awe=inspiring. Thomas Kintner will tell you more in this fascinating feature which leads off our latest issue. The ever resourcefulDiegoCordobahas produced two features spanning the centuries as he takes a look at thework of the artist ErikKriek, whose gutsy, comic-styled artwork is wowing art directors and fans far beyond the shores of his home based in theNetherlands. Diego’s second feature delves deep into the story of the artist who signed himself J.O.B. Jacques Onfroy de Bréville’s work epitomises the full-on majesty and pomp of Imperial France. The fact that illustration wasn’t Job’s first choice as a career in the arts adds, rather than subtracts from the magnificence of his achievement, as Diego explains in this fascinating feature. The comics that appeared throughout Europe and the UK in the latter half of the 20th century were enriched by the work of many fine draughtsmen recruited by illustration agencies and studios catering to an international market. In what was a very competitive arena the work of Arturo Del Castillo shone out like a beacon of brightness. We are privileged to share with you a remarkable series of pages that he created for a comic strip adaptation of Dumas’ ‘TheThreeMusketeers’. To round off this issue we have the first in a series of delightful and, oft times, ironic glimpses into the fickle world of illustration, as Diego Cordoba reveals some of the perverse twists of fate which have attended the creation of some of the most memorable illustrations over the last two centuries. Finally, our apologies for the non-appearance of the PhilipMendoza feature, whichwe had to set aside due to space (or lack of) considerations. Rest assured, it will be appearing in a later issue.
