EXTRACTS: Illustrators issue 16 © 2016 The Book Palace (96 PAGES in Full edition)

96 @ We were delighted to receive the following message from illustrators 14 'artist of the issue', Tara McPherson: I wanted to say thank you for the amazingly lovely and huge feature in your magazine! It looks beautiful and I received the copies just perfectly. Thank you!! And sorry for the delayed reply... I am quite pregnant right now, due any day actually, and have been slowing down on my work drastically! I hope the sales are great and I am so proud to be in the issue! —Tara Great to hear from you Tara and we're all really delighted to hear the news of the imminent arrival of the wee one. Please accept our heartiest congratulations and plant a kiss on the head of the little cherub from the whole team here at illustrators. We received the following message from Sara Steel: I recently came across a copy of your magazine, I say magazine, but it's more like a book, and I just wanted to say how amazing it is. I am currently studying illustration and have been looking for something like this for ages. The pictures you choose are great and I love the way that the writers bring the subjects to life with stories about their art and their careers. I would love to see a few more features on women illustrators—there are a lot you could consider. —Sara Funnily enough Sara, we have a feature on Lucy Kemp-Welch in the works. If you haven't come across her before— then you are in for a treat! The following reader also appears to be enjoying illustrators! Despite lacking any artistic credentials of my own, I always enjoy reading illustrators . It exposes me to the talents of artists, most of whom (I shamefully admit) I have never heard of, and probably never would, had I not been drawn in by its sheer opulence. If other aspects of your life are devoid of luxury, at least you can immerse yourself in the lavish splendour of this most estimable journal: the production values are second to none. I read Issue 14 (or should that be Volume 14?) from cover to cover. My initial reaction to Tara McPherson’s work was incomprehension, but I quickly became fascinated by the way she creates subjects that are often physically fragile and vulnerable, but exude confidence and depth of character. Thumbing through the pages of Joe Jusko’s work, my feelings of physical inadequacy were steadily increasing, when suddenly splashes on the page told me I should have been wearing my dribble-guard to view his scantily clad female subjects. I found his Primal Pair singularly arresting: my eyes kept darting back and forth between the lion and Lara Croft - each had my adrenalin pumping, but for quite different reasons. Maurice Leloir’s drawings and watercolours are exactly the style of illustration that I wanted to see bringing to life the books I read as a child: action, accuracy and exquisite detail. They are pictures that can be searched time and again, to find previously unnoticed facets. The copiously illustrated interview with Adam Stower exemplifies another of illustrators strengths: genuine involvement with the artists (well, the living ones at least). Both the interviews and biographies give true insights into the lives, work and techniques of successful artists: the up- and-coming, the well-established and the historical. It should be prescribed reading for anyone aspiring to a career in illustration, and any institution that offers a course in illustration should judge itself inadequate if it does not provide its students with access to this window onto the world to which they seek entry. I am already in a frenzy of anticipation over Issue 15—dribble guard and incontinence pads for this one, I think. —Alan Thom We were also hugely honoured to have the mighty Joe Jusko as our other 'artist of the issue' appear in illustrators 14. Here's what Joe had to say on Facebook and via email: Coming Soon— Mike Mignola! I got the books today! Thank you SO much. The issue looks fantastic all around! So happy with it! —Joe We will be hooking up again with Joe in very shortly as he takes us through how he creates one of his amazing artworks.
