I still recall my first encounter with Neal Adams' work, it was in the pages of a comic called Strange Tales which featured the adventures of a recently deceased quasi-superhero come trapeze artiste named Deadman . A lot of digging was required to find the comic on the Thorpe and Porter spinner rack, but once I saw Neal's work I was hooked. That was in 1967 and in the intervening 50 years a lot has happened. But as Peter Stone reveals, Neal's art has retained its dynamism, despite the changes within the industry that he entered all those years ago. There is something delightfully engaging about Paul Slater's work. As Diego Cordoba's feature reveals—Paul's zany surrealism is powered by a love of English eccentricity, which is coupled with a masterful command of painting and underpinned by an exceptional draughtsmanship. This places him firmly in the premier league of image makers. A fact that is reflected by a client list that has included celebrity chefs, major advertisers and prestigious newspapers. Will Davies was an illustrator that was off our radar until our friend and noted champion of truly great illustration, Leif Peng, introduced us to the man that at one stage in his career, was described as "Canada's highest paid illustrator". You will see why when you read Leif 's feature. Cecil Glossop is a name you may not be familiar with, but in the 1930s, when Britain was still a colonial power and aircraft and automobiles were still in their comparative infancy, Glossop's work was firing the imaginations of British schoolboys with depictions of derring-do. With a major retrospective on the art of Mort Kűnstler in the offing, we are going to share with you an illustration that still conveys a frisson of genuine terror every time you look at it. Scarier even, than the slobbering behemoth that Leonardo DiCaprio had to wrestle with in The Revenant . With some super suggestions for inspirational autumn reads and a letter column of thought-provoking correspondence, we reckon you will have enough to occupy you through the lengthening nights. illustrators ISBN 978-1-907081-36-1 ISSN 2052-6520 Issue Number 16 Published Autumn 2016 Copyright © 2016 by The Book Palace Ltd.
