81 and they will bubble up to the surface. PR: Do you think it is necessary for people wanting to work as professional illustrators to undertake a degree in illustration? AS: It isn’t necessary as such, but I do think it is advisable. Spending time in a supportive and inspiring environment with like-minded people gives you the opportunity to discover a way of working that is unique to you. Having the equipment, facilities and tutors on hand is invaluable too. I would recommend it to anyone hoping to pursue a career as an illustrator. I had an amazing time at college. Much of what I learnt there was from my fellow students as well as from the staff. PR: Have you any projects that you are particularly pleased with? AS: In 2011 I wrote and illustrated ‘Silly Doggy!’, a picture book published by Templar. In this book I tried to encapsulate what I particularly enjoy about picture books, namely using the interplay of words and pictures to tell a story in the most effective way. 'Silly Doggy' is the story of a little girl called Lily who is delighted to find a ‘Silly Doggy!’ in her garden.
