59 Maurice Leloir In 1893, when the son of Alexandre Dumas decided that a lavish illustrated edition of his father’s immortal story, The Three Musketeers , was long overdue, he felt that there was only one illustrator who could do the novel justice and that man was Maurice Leloir. Not only was Leloir amply fitted for the task through his professional accomplishments as an illustrator on such works as ‘Manon Lascaut’, ‘The Sentimental Journey’ and ‘The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’, but also because he was a widely recognised expert on the David Ashford draws aside the curtains on the majesterial world of Maurice Leloir, whose sumptuous art brought to life stories of France's rich and colourful imperial history.
