95 The Gallery: Gustav Doré ALPINE ANGST: Gustav Doré's vertigo-inducing depiction of Edmund Whymper's disasterous descent of the Matterhorn on 14th July 1865. The production of the artwork created considerable unease for Whymper, who was in the depths of survivor's guilt and mourning the loss of his companions. Dore had been so exorcised by reading of the disaster that he produced several drawings based on Whymper's account. Whymper, who was already under close scrutiny for the circumstances which had led to the loss of life of a party that included the aristocratic, Lord Francis Douglas, was further discomforted by requests from Dore's publisher for as much additional detail as could be furnished. The images of his companions sliding to their doom were to haunt Whymper until the end of his days.
