3 William Stout The life, career and amazing adventures of one of the most remarkable illustrators is explored by Peter Richardson. “Huh—going to see a movie? Wow! Two hours alone in the dark. You could be having your own adventures instead of watching someone else’s.” It was these words spoken to the teenaged William Stout, as he headed purposefully along a sun drenched Hollywood street to a movie theatre, that were to prove a seminal moment in the young artist’s development. Stout was up until that moment an unrepentant movie nut, happy to submit to the privations demanded of Los Angeles film festival attendees (sleeping bag, food, drink and stimulants) so that he could completely immerse himself in the world of celluloid fantasy.
