Set in1757,whenFrance andGreatBritainbattled for the control ofNorthAmerica, it is the storyof the twodaughtersofColonel Munro, commanderof abeleagured fort and their journey tobe reunitedwithhim.Thegirls,Cora andAlice, are rescued from an ambushbyHawkeye, ahunter, andhis twoMohican companions, Chingachgook andhis son,Uncas.Together, they endeavour toget thegirls to safety. Thefirst adaptation in thisbookwasdrawn andpainted in full colourby renowned Italian artistRuggeroGiovannini and appeared in TellMeWhy in1968.Giovannini’s strip is “simply the finest, most authentic andmost colourful, picture strip adaptation of ‘TheLastof theMohicans’ ever to appear”. The secondversion, from LookandLearn ,wasdrawn infine and authenticdetailbyCecilDoughty andwasoriginallypublished in 1980.Using asmuch aspossibleCooper’sownwords, it canbe fairly classed asoneof themost faithfulpicture strip adaptations of the story. Althoughobviously taken from the same sourcematerial, both versionsdiffer inmoreways than just the lookof their artwork. These, and the furtherdifferenceswhen compared tovarious cinematicversions, willhopefully inspire readers to seekout and readCooper’soriginalbook.
