Modesty is over fifty and Willie even older. Sir Gerald Tarrant retired and five years later suffered a heart attack while staying with Modesty at her country cottage. He died quickly, quietly, contentedly, in the ambulance on the way to hospital, holding Modesty’s hand. The Colliers now have two grown up children but Steve is still working. On this occasion it is for the government of the Central American Republic of Montelero. Dinah has accompanied him and they have been joined by Willie. This is fortunate because a revolution has just broken out. Willie is able to telephone Modesty in England and just manages to let her know how things stand. She is at her cottage with her old friend John Dall who immediately offers her the use of his private jet to take them to Panama. Willie, and the Colliers get on the train taking the government to Panama but it is ambushed, halted and attacked by the rebels. Modesty flies in and parachutes down leaving her plane to crash on the rebel position. While the track is repaired Modesty and Willie keep the rebels at bay until the train is ready to continue its journey to safety but this time they leave it too late to disengage. Modesty is killed by a stray bullet and Willie is shot while trying to escape with a broken ankle. I I 416 The synopsis of the story below ends with the deaths of Modesty and Willie. My wife, Mary, who is as much a Modesty fan as I am and loves Peter O’Donnell dearly, refuses to read it. She has told Peter that she simply does not want to know the end. If you feel the same way as my wife do not read on. WARNING
