EXTRACTS: JOHN STEEL Fleetway Picture Library Classics © 2020 Book Palace Books (272 PAGES in Full edition)

From the coffee bars of 60’s Soho to the wharves of Hong Kong, these four John Steel Case-books were originally printed in Thriller Picture Library issues 363, 367, 395 and 403. Three stories are drawn by Spain’s Luis Bermejo whose artistic career in Britain began in the late 1950s when he worked on the titles Girls Crystal and TarzanWeekly . He then worked for Fleetway on their pocket-size comic series Thriller , War and Battle Picture Libraries in the early 1960s. Later, with help, he would take over the strip ‘Heros the Spartan’ from Frank Bellamy in 1963. The remaining tale is drawn by Reg Bunn , co-creator of Lion ’s ‘The Spider’. Bunn can be said to have been at the forefront of Britain’s first real steps into the world of the adventure picture strip, his style perfectly appropriate for the post-war comics. Bunn altered his style to fit the changing times, while at the same time retaining that all-important ‘readable’ quality that he always brought to his work.
