131 creating strips featuring jungle adventures, pirate tales, and science fiction and detective strips. The signature by-line he gave himself – ‘by Ron’ - signalled to young readers that they were in for a treat whatever the subject matter. It was expected of all Scion’s artists not only to draw, ink and letter their work but also to provide the story and script. Such grounding was to reap dividends for Ron throughout his career in comics. During the early part of the 1950s, Ron was mostly known for his strips of Wild West adventures. He himself was fascinated by the genre as can be seen in his FACING PAGE LEFT: The young Ron at a party for the staff and contributors to Mickey Mouse Weekly . The bespectacled man to his left is artist Ron Neilson, whose Mickey Mouse strips were amongst the finest U.K. Disney art seen at the time. FACING PAGE RIGHT: Cover for Prarie Western. By the early 1950s Ron's art was already much in demand for U.S. styled comics with a Western theme. ABOVE: The cover to Big Pirate Comic published in 1948 and a great example of the teenage Ron's artwork.
