This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Eric Parker.

After the British fleet defeated the Dutch at the battle of Texel, war broke out against the Spanish. Robert Blake took a small 25 vessel fleet south to Cadiz.

Despite fierce fighting in April 1657 it took just two hours to capture six "Royal Galleons" and 16 other treasure ships that were returning from Peru.

The top picture shows the custom of prayers before the fighting. In 1655 Blake attacked the port of Tunis when the locals refused to release prisoners. He went very close inshore to achieve this.

The image bottom right shows a "Whipshaft" which is how the large ships of the 17th Century were steered.

Published in Look and Learn #325 6 April 1968.
