This is the original Gouache painting by Patrick Nicolle.

Monks Eating. Fourteenth century monks were no doubt very religious men, but that did not prevent them from eating well. They very often sat down to meals the size of which would make us gasp today. Meals in the monks' dining room or refectory, were accompanied by a reading from the Scriptures.

But the meals were not necessarily simple and as we see in this amusing "initial" from an old manuscript the monks kept a plentiful supply of wine in the cellar.
