Captain John Dundas Cochrane was a British Naval Officer who walked 3,000 miles from Dieppe through Russia to Okhotsk in Asia. He covered over 2,000 miles in Siberia alone. One tangible result was meeting a woman who became his wife. They met in the province of Kamtchatka.

She became the first woman from that region to visit London. Years later Cochrane was again filled with wanderlust and set off for South America. He died of fever in Colombia and subsequently his wife returned to Russia.
