This is the unique original Gouache painting by Jack Keay.

The Battle of Antietam Creek in 1862 was a pointless massacre with nearly 24,000 men killed or wounded with neither side gaining an advantage.

It became infamous as New York Tribune reporter George Washburn Smalley rode into the heart of the battle to document the terrible events. Inset shows Smalley's horse having been shot out from under him.
