Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone (biography)Medium:
Gouache on BoardSize:
13" x 9" (325mm x 225mm)Date:
1966This is the original Gouache painting by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone.
An original by twins Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone first published in Finding Out magazine and subsequently in Robert Lancelyn Green's very rare book 'Jason and the Golden Fleece'.
The Argo was the ship on which Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece. She contained in her prow a magical piece of timber from the sacred forest of Dodona, which could speak and render prophecies. She was named after her builder, Argus.
Several painterly techniques have been employed by the sisters who painted their paintings together. Areas of thicker gouache along with the thinner more translucent areas of paintwork work together to create a harmonious painterly depth in the foliage and undergrowth of this painting.
The board has been cut to allow text to fit around the painting and registration marks are visible as hand drawn crosses. These are minor detractions from the action of the painting and add to the history of the piece.Click for larger image ...
