Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone (biography)Medium:
Gouache on BoardSize:
13" x 10" (330mm x 265mm)Date:
1963This is the original Gouache painting by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone.
A striking painting by the Johnstone Twins depicting the three Gorgon Sisters, Stheno, Euryale and Medusa. Medusa was the only mortal sister of the three and was slain by Perseus, unleashing a giant and the horse Pegasus.
The skull to centre bottom of piece is painted in a strikingly modern, graphic style, and the stances of the Gorgons evoke poses from dance and theatre, which the sisters would have been exposed to through their mother's theatre design.
The original hand drawn registration marks are visible on this board, and it has been cut to shape in order to set type, which adds to the history of this piece.
Unfortunately this piece has a few areas of damage where glue residue has rendered the image slightly reflective.
