This is the original Gouache painting by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone.

This powerful image painted by the twins Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone shows King Amycus fighting Polydeuces, one of the Argonauts. King Amycus, the son of Poseidon, challenged the Argonauts to a boxing match in Bithynia. The King was defeated and killed by Polydeuces.

The twins passed their paintings between themselves and painted together until they were both completely satisfied with the result. They have struck a fantastic balance in this piece, painting terrifically muscular bodies whilst adding dainty details such as detailed toes and tassels.

This was originally painted for Finding Out magazine, but was later published in Roger Lancelyn Greene's extremely rare book 'Jason and the Golden Fleece', published by Purnell in 1968.

This illustration board has three black registration marks that would have been added by the publisher. There are also pencil markings on the back of the board which seem to be page references.
