This is the unique original Gouache painting by Oliver Frey.

HMS Thetis tragically sank in Liverpool Bay on the first day of trials in 1939. There were 50 civilian observers as well as a full crew of over 50 onboard. Only four managed to escape.

The painting shows the sea water flooding in from an open torpedo tube. The submarine was re-floated and renamed Thunderbolt and served in the Royal Navy until 1943 when it was sunk in the Mediterranean.
