This portrait of 'The Virgin Queen' is modelled on a famous picture portrait of Queen Elizabeth I and commemorates the defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588), depicted in the background.
In the original Elizabeth's hand rests on the globe, symbolising her international power.
Originally published as the cover to Look and Learn #139 12 September 1964. The mark to the left of her head is tape glue residue and to the right there is some damage to the surface of the paper. Regardless this is a very early piece of Look and Learn cover art and the price reflects the condition.
