This vivid depiction of monks being burnt at the stake under the orders of Mary Tudor painted by Cecil Doughty captures the shocking moment under the Heresy Act, that numerous Protestants were executed in the Marian persecutions.
The first executions occurred over a period of five days in early February 1555. Mary Tudor had always rejected the break from Rome that her father Henry VIII had led.
This painting was signed and dated 1951 by Doughty, but the date had been painted out prior to the piece going to print.
