This is the original artwork from the Look and Learn Book 1985, showing the story of Burke and Hare, murderers and bodysnatchers operating in Edinburgh. Dr. Knox had offered £10 for any body given for dissection at the medical school in Edinburgh. Unlike other bodysnatchers, Burke and Hare found victims, plied them with drink, and then murdered them and sold the corpse to Dr. Knox.
After at least 16 murders they were caught when one of their lodging house mates came across a corpse. Hare turned Kings Evidence and his evidence led to Burke being hanged on 28th January 1829. Hare was released in February 1829 and was last seen in Carlisle, although persistent legend claims that he ended his days as a blind beggar on the streets of London.
