1 ISSUE NINE CONTENTS 2 His rise to fame as the preeminent illustrator of science fiction, told in his own words. 94 40 Peter Richardson meets up with an illustrator who is literally getting her art out and about. Miss Led Bruce Pennington EDITORIAL 82 The Studio - Will Terry The art of Sexton Blake’s premier illustrator is revisited by David Ashford and Norman Wright. 64 Eric R. Parker If a single illustrator couldbe said tohavedefined the sciencefictionpaperback cover, then Bruce Pennington is surely that man. His work dominated UK science fiction publishing and for generations of readers, his art defined the worlds that lay within the pages of the paperbacks that featured his covers. Bruce’s memoir of those heady days captures the excitement of an era when opportunities abounded for illustrators with the necessary talent and drive to exploit them. Miss Led’s work is testimony to a new era in illustration, bright, feisty and covering a variety of outlets, many geared towards directly communicating her ideas straight to her audience, whether that be via lively graffiti, elegant in-storemurals or creating portraits of her growing fan-base. By contrast, thework of Eric Parker harks back to an erawhen illustrationwas the pre- eminent form of visual communication, with magazines and periodicals dominated by punchy artwork on covers and interiors. An artist with the exceptional talents that Parker possessed, was guaranteed tobekept busy and thework that he created for theUK’s largest periodical publisher spannedmuch of the previous century. Will Terry is aname that is becoming increasingly familiar to those seekingguidance in the craftof illustration as well as lovers of beautifully illustrated children’s books. We share studio time withWill as he relates the story of his development as an artist as well as some thought provoking observations about the future for illustration and its practitioners. Finally, and with a deep sense of sadness, we are setting aside our letters page as we pay tribute to the unexpected death of our Associate Editor and design guru, Bryn Havord. Bryn was one of the greatest designers and art directors to have worked in Fleet Street during what was an era of revolutionary change. His passion and commitment to illustration was total and one of the consolations of this very tragic turn of events is the knowledge that during the last two years of his life, he was working on a project that meant as much to him as it did to us and our readership. Bryn was the man responsible for putting a professional edge to our publication and the guidance and values which he invested into the look and content of illustrators will remain as testimony to this great man. The opinions expressed in illustrators are those of the writers, and are not necessarily those of the editor and publishers.
