34 Sep E. Scott David Ashford reveals how a seventy year old illustrator set about injecting swash- buckle fire and action into boy’s adventure fiction. As a boy I spent much of my spare time devouring comics, magazines, illustrated books and adventure annuals and, as a result, I became almost obsessively interested in the art of illustration. I also loved looking at the giant posters stuck on walls, some advertising current films and others promoting sweets, alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and such like. It was a certain poster for ‘Swan Vestas’ matches that sticks most particularly in my memory.
