This is the original Gouache painting by Patrick Nicolle.

Medieval Cook. In medieval times bread was the staple diet of the ordinary folk. These drawings show the various stages in its preparation from ploughing, harrowing (notice the boys scaring away the birds) and gathering the grain, to the milling and baking.

A cook was not always a sort of greasy menial. The handsome figure on the right was cook to two French kings, Charles V and Charles VI. Notice the three cooking pots emblazoned on his shield.
