Artist: Peter Jackson (biography)
Medium: Gouache on Board
Size: 22" x 13" (555mm x 340mm)
Date: 1968

This is the original Gouache painting by Peter Jackson.

Three images painted by Peter Jackson to show the development of roads in Britain. During the middle ages roads frequently became impassable due to wet weather. The centre image shows a road being metalled as an improvement during the Tudor period.

One way of paying for improved roads was to make users pay, thus the toll road with barred gate shown on the right, a 19th Century example.

The artwork was published in Treasure issue 310 late 1968.
