This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Wilf Hardy.

In 1925 the famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen formed an expedition to fly to the North Pole. His group took two Dornier flying boats as transport in their attempt.

Only 120 miles from the Pole they had to land in order to determine their position. One of the craft was unable to take off and the other only managed on it's 9th attempt after the explorers had created a 1,500 feet runway by stamping down the snow.

Later in 1925 Amundsen completed a trans-polar flight from Spitsbergen to Alaska with the airship Norge.

An original painting by Hardy first published in Look and Learn #455 3 October 1970.
