This futuristic painting by Wilf Hardy painted for Look and Learn magazine in 1968, shows a new 'Ballute' being worked on by the American air force, in order to rescue airmen who had ejected from their damaged planes.
The idea was that attached to the main parachute would be a miniature hot air balloon which would inflate and the air would subsequently be heated by propane gas. This should allow up to 30 minutes of flying time which should be enough for a rescue aircraft equipped with a special harness to arrive and snatch the falling airman.
