This is the original Gouache painting by Wilf Hardy.

With his submarine under attack from a Japanese gunboat; too badly wounded to get below in time to save his vessel Commander Gilmore gives his final order to "Take Her Down!".

This happened in 1943 during the phase of the War in the Pacific when the Japanese were trying to rescue what was left of their men on Guadalcanal. Gilmore's sacrifice resulted in his ship and crew making it back to base safely.

The artwork was reprinted in The Look and Learn Book 1982.
