Ref: DoughtyGeorge1 (Click for LARGE picture)

Artist: Cecil Doughty (biography)
Medium: Gouache on Board
Size: 8" x 9" (205mm x 230mm)
Date: 1981

This is the unique original Gouache painting by Cecil Doughty.

From a history of Britain that was published in Look and Learn during 1981. This week the feature concerned the arrival of King George I and the threat of a Jacobite uprising.

The painting shows Change Alley in the City of London. Shareholders rushed here in 1720 when the South Sea Company collapsed, they tried to sell their shares but in the panic they proved worthless.

Note the grim faces contrasted with the alert dog. A nicely composed scene from C.L. Doughty.

Originally published in Look and Learn issue 1015, 22nd August 1981.
