This is the original Gouache painting by Graham Coton.

Otto Lilienthal made over 1,000 flights in his primitive glider, covering distances up to 400 yards. He controlled the direction and attitude of the glider by shifting his body to change the machine's centre of gravity.

His work, and that of Sir George Cayley, paved the way for people like the Wright brothers, pioneers of engine-powered flight.

Published in Look and Learn 557 16th September 1972. Note that there is glue residue on the board just off the image to the left; this is reflected in the price.
