Men and Maps: The Textbook Explorer. Alexander Humboldt climbing Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. At 16,400feet his porters gave up the attempt due to altitude sickness. Humboldt struggled on alone until reaching 18,893 feet. Although he had to stop 1,400 feet from the summit his altitude record lasted another 36 years, not bad for a record set in 1799!

Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 538 (6 May 1972).
